NCGS Awards and Scholarships

The NCGS has long extended formal recognition in granting scholarships to graduate students, honorary status to special Society members, and monetary awards to K-12 teachers.

Scholarships

Every January, our Richard Chambers Memorial Scholarship program awards monetary support to graduate students for research projects related to Northern California geology. Applications are invited during the previous autumn. Applications for the 2024 awards are open, with a submission deadline of December 2, 2023. Learn more here about the program and previous recipients.

Teaching Awards

Our Teacher of the Year Award is granted to a local K-12 teacher who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the field of geoscience education. The winner receives a cash award of $1000 and is entered in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists national and Pacific Section contests for possible additional awards. Applications for the 2024 award are open, with a submission deadline of March 2, 2024. Download the application information in DOCX or PDF format.

The NCGS formerly sponsored a Geoscience Teaching Award to individuals for excellence in the teaching of earth or environmental sciences in Grades K-8 and Grades 9-12. See the awardees here.
